The Department of Government and International Studies (GIS) aims at enhancing knowledge of International Affairs from the political and cultural points of view. Research work at GIS covers Comparative Government and Politics, International Relations, European and China Studies, and Language Studies. The main current research themes developed at GIS include Hong Kong and Chinese politics, European politics, integration and security, social movements and protests in China, political transitions and democratization both in Europe and Asia, Chinese foreign and security policies in particular in Central Asia and Africa, Taiwan politics and relations across the Taiwan Strait, and European comparative language policies.

The academics of the Department of Social Work have been engaged in various different research projects pursued along three major lines: youth studies, mental health, and social policy.The focus of Youth Studies is placed on youth work, youth development, youth policy and youth empowerment, which is aimed at advancing the edge of critical youth studies and promoting the welfare and interest of youth particularly those at the margin of society.  Mental Health of various target groups and its dynamic relationship with the family and the community at large is the focus of this research niche of the Department.  The focus of Social Policy is to critically examine the policy aspects of social welfare and social work.
