The Department of Social Work had organised three noon-time dialogues in Semester 2 of AY2016/17, more than 220 students had participated in the co-curricular learning activities.
Poverty Situation and Poverty Alleviation Policy in Hong Kong (16 January 2017)
Dr. Law Chi Kwong, member of Commission of Poverty and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Community Care Fund was invited to give a talk on “Poverty Situation and Poverty Alleviation Policy in Hong Kong” at the Noon-time Dialogue held by the Department of Social Work on 16 January 2017.
In addition to analysing the causes of poverty in Hong Kong, Dr. Law shared with students about the coverage and effectiveness of various government policy intervention measures. Over 50 students from various Departments, both Bachelor and Master levels, attended the seminar. Some of them expressed their concern over the termination of the scheme of “One-off Living Subsidy for Low-income Households Not Living in Public Housing and Not Receiving CSSA”. Such dialogue can build up the mindset of social concern and platform of critical thinking among the students.
Talk on Dynamic Life – Never Give Up (20 February 2017)
Mr. Tam Wai Yip, Sam, athlete of Special Olympic Hong Kong, gave a talk at Noon-time Dialogues on Dynamic Life – Never Give Up held by the Department of Social Work (SOWK) on 20 February 2017. Mr. Tam represented Hong Kong to attend the Special Olympic in his age 16, and he got 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals in the swimming item. After that, he had served the Waston Athletic Club as executive assistant for more than 10 years, especially in promoting sport activities among mental disabilities. In 2007-2009, he was appointed as Special Olympics International Global Messenger. He was one of the members of Executive Committee of Special Olympics Hong Kong from 2007 to 2015.
Mr. Tam shared his perseverance throughout his life as a mental disable, but he managed to learn and serve in his life, especially for the right of disabilities. More than 50 students registered for this co-curricular learning and they had actively exchanged with Mr. Tam.
Talk on Dominant Discourse, Gender Stereotype and Empowerment of Physical Abilities (11 April 2017)
Ms. Yim Chur Pik, Rabi, member of HKSAR Women’s Commission, Vice-Chairman of Direction Association for the Handicapped, and Regeneration Society Top Ten Regeneration Warriors in 2015-16, was invited to give a talk on “Dominant Discourse, Gender Stereotype and Empowerment of Physical Abilities” at the Noon-time Dialogue on 11 April 2017. In addition to sharing her story of being a physical disability in a car accident in the Valentine Day of 1998, Ms. Yim invited the participants to re-think the right of physical disabilities, gender justice and empowerment in Hong Kong society. Such dialogue attracted more than 60 students registered for this co-curricular Learning.
