Whole Person Development of Children: An Integrated Approach to Moral and Emotion Education in Kindergarten
The Center for Child Development organised a dissemination event for the captioned 3-year project funded by the Quality Education Fund on 25 November 2017. About 200 participants including principals, teachers and parents attended the event. The project aims to foster an all-round development of kindergarten children with emphasis on moral and emotional development through constructing a comprehensive teaching package and guiding teachers in using the material. A total of 22 kindergartens participated in the project. Teachers' knowledge and skills in conducting whole person education in kindergarten were enhanced through teacher training seminars as well as class observations and evaluation sessions, and parents’ awareness of the importance of moral and emotion education in early childhood was raised through parent seminars.
Prof. Ma Hing Keung, Principal Investigator of the project, opened the event with an introduction of the project’s theoretical framework, followed by an introduction of the teaching package by the project coordinator, Miss Michelle Shum. The teaching package consists of 90 lesson plans, 30 lesson plans for each grade, on various aspects of moral education such as psychological needs, human relationships, justice reasoning, and moral characters as well as aspects of emotion education including emotional knowledge, emotional competence, and emotional regulation. The package adopted a spiral curriculum approach, and it is well received by teachers who have been involved in the implementation of the lesson plans. During the event, they shared how they integrated the lessons into their school-based curriculum. Dr. Wong Kit Ching, Guest Lecturer of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching at The Education University of Hong Kong, shared how parents can influence their children’s moral and emotional development. The multimedia learning materials and an application software developed for this project to promote parent-child interaction were also demonstrated. Moral development and the nurturing of positive values and attitudes are emphasised in the newly released “Kindergarten Education Curriculum Guide” (2017). The package offers a timely teaching resource for early childhood educators.
