International Symposium on Geoenvironmental Informatics (ISGEI 2017) (12-15 December 2017)

The Centre for Geo-computation Studies and Department of Geography held the International Symposium on Geoenvironmental Informatics (ISGEI 2017) on 12-15 December 2017. A total of 150 scholars and experts from mainland China, Hong Kong, the US, Canada, Belgium, Austria and Central Asian countries attended the symposium to share their latest research and development. 

Prof. Clayton Mackenzie, Provost and Prof. Jiming Liu, Associate Vice-President (Research), HKBU attended the opening ceremony on 13 December. Prof. Liu and Prof. Gordon Huang, President of International Society for Environment Information Sciences delivered the welcome speech. Prof. Mackenzie presented certificates to the three keynote speakers, Prof. Gordon Huang, Prof. Samuel A. Cushman, and Prof. Anthony G.O. Yeh. 60 scholars presented their studies in 3 technology talks and 6 technical sessions, namely Geocomputation in Natural Disaster Studies, Geospatial and Cloud Computing, Land Use and Land Cover Change, Urban Modeling, Geoenvironmental Information, and Geo-Informatics of Water and Energy Cycles. The symposium included a Central Asia Forum on the collaborative research for resource and environment. In the forum, scholars reviewed the science and technology cooperation in Central Asia and discussed future collaboration. 22 institutes discussed and successfully signed the Second-term “Memorandum of International Consortium for Ecosystem Monitoring and Management in response to Climate Change in Central Asia”. On 15 December, Prof. Bernhart Richard Owen and Dr. Hon Chim Chiu led the field excursion to Hong Kong Geopark to introduce the geoenvironment in Hong Kong.

The ISGEI 2017 is a major academic event of the International Society for Environmental Information Sciences. It aims to promote the extensive and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas, technologies, scientific findings, and general knowledge in the area of geoenvironmental informatics. The ISGEI 2017 was co-organised by Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography in Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology in Chinese Academy of Sciences, Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia of Chinese Academy of Sciences, UNDP China, GSC Branch Society of Geographical Construction in the Arid and Semiarid Land, and Centre for China Urban and Regional Studies at HKBU, and supported by Beijing Piesat Information Technology Co., Ltd, Zondy Cyber Group, and SuperMap Software Co., Ltd.
