 Sociology Information Session Group discussion during the History Information Session

Sociology Information Session (13 March 2017)

The Department of Sociology organised an Information Session for all first-year students admitted to the China Studies, BA/BSocSci (GEOG/GIS/HIST/SOC), and Double-Degree (Liberal Studies Teaching) programmes on 13 March 2017. A total of 69 students, 10 Departmental mentors/academic staff, and 6 Sociology alumni participated in this event. Staff introduced the Sociology Department to the students and the alumni shared with the students their career experiences after graduation. Lively discussion in small groups followed the speeches.

History Information Session for Freshmen (3 April 2017)

The “2017 Information Session for Freshmen” organised by the Department of History was held on 3 April 2017. The event attracted 70 year one students from the SOSC broad-based admission, China Studies and double degree (Liberal Studies Teaching) programmes. Over 100 participants including academic staff, peer mentors and student helped at the venue to meet Year 1 freshmen.

Prof. Clara Wing-chung Ho, Head of the Department delivered a welcome speech to kick off the event. She expressed warm greetings to all freshmen who participated in the event and encouraged them to apply their major based on personal interest and ability. She invited students to ask more questions during the group discussion as members of the Department would try their best to support.

Prof. Stephanie Po-yin Chung, Advisor of BA/BSocSc (GEOG/GIS/HIST/SOC), mentioned that students who are interested in History studies should keep learning all the time by reading evidences and facts from different sources. She encouraged students to enjoy what they were reading. Prof. Cindy Yik-yi Chu, advisor of BSSc (Hons) in China Studies - History Concentration and BA (Hons) + BEd Liberal Studies Teaching programmes, announced that a new subject will be launched in the new semester. As Prof. Chu’s research focus is on Modern and Contemporary China, she encouraged students who have the same interest to work with her.  

All advisors of BA/BSocSc (GEOG/GIS/HIST/SOC), including Dr. Chi-man Kwong, Dr. Ka-chai Tam, Dr. Oiyan Liu, Dr. Guangxin Fan, Dr. Wing-chung Fan, Dr. Yuen-han Law, Dr. Jie Ding, Dr. Kam-chau Kwok and Dr. Raymond Kwun-sun Lau, were in charged for group discussions. Moreover, student helpers who are from different classes and programmes supported the event and shared their experiences with freshmen. Some peer mentors also served as student representatives during the event.

Dr. Chi-man Kwong facilitated the whole event. He first introduced the structure and different aspects of the Department, such as academic staff and teaching staff, followed by course introductions, requirements of graduation and scholarship opportunities. 

A buffet dinner was served during the event, then students were divided into five groups according to their interests, enabling them to ask in-depth questions about the Department and the curriculum through friendly interactions. Prof. Ho shifted from groups to groups and gave some advice to students.
