Be SEN’s Training Course for Coaches
Invited by the social enterprise “Run Our City”, Dr. Simpson Wong, Department of Education Studies organized a course titled “Be SEN’s Training Course for Coaches” with Dr. Clare Yu from Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Dr. Dorothy Chan, Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The aim of the course is to help street marathon coaches and undergraduates majoring in Sports Science grasp a more thorough understanding for students who have special educational needs (SEN) and design suitable training programmes for them. Students with SEN are sometimes believed to display special characteristics distinct from others. However, judging from another perspective, these characteristics may actually be beneficial to them. For example, they can be very energetic, and they often persevere in times of difficulties, and they are very attentive. If these characteristics are applied in sports, and their talents and interests in sports are nourished at an early age, they may be able to develop a more positive attitude towards their sports and may even outperform typically developing students. In the long term, doing sports would be extremely helpful in shaping their future life. Sports Therapy will be a sustainable and effective direction of treatment for students with SEN.
