Prof. Jackie Sieppert, Dean, Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary visited the Department of Social Work, HKBU on 21-26 April 2015. A ceremony for signing the MOU between the two universities was organised with Prof. Atara Sivan, Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching), Faculty of Social Sciences, and Mr. Peter Li, International Office, HKBU; and Prof. Sieppert and Prof. Daniel Lai, University of Calgary on academic exchange. A Letter of Agreement on summer study of students of Master of Social Work (MSW)Programme at the Faculty of Social Work of University of Calgary was also signed.
14 students of the MSW Programme participated the two-week summer study at the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary for social work learning in a global context from 11 to 23 May 2015. Apart from visiting different social work organisations in Calgary, they had completed a course on “Advanced Theory and Methods: International Community Development”. To prepare for the summer study, the students were attending a pre-study session conducted by Prof. Daniel Lai, Scholar-in-Residence of the Department of Social Work, HKBU on 21 April 2015. This summer study for postgraduate students of the Department has proved to be successful with the positive feedbacks from the students as well as the faculty members from the University of Calgary. This exchange has facilitated global exposure of postgraduate students regarding social work education and practice in another culture and social context. Prof. Petrus Ng, Head of Department of Social Work was invited to visit the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary and review the first summer study of MSW students from 25 to 27 May 2015 and to meet with Prof. Janaka Ruwanpura, Vice-Provost (International), and faculty members of the Faculty to discuss further academic collaborations.
